Drive #Ow281446 bravo III
Boat was ran with drive in trailered position and a rhythmic thunk kept coming from drive after that. Removed drive from boat and tried to turn u-joints and kept finding a spot where it would get really tight and i would have to use a screwdriver to turn the u-joints.
Started to take upper apart and found if i removed the shifter the drive would free up, so i replaced the shifter but still had the same problem. So i replaced all the gears, bearings, and the shaft that the two driven gears ride on. Put it all back together after shimming (yes i do have the tools) but now it is still binding if i put it in gear. I double checked the (+) and (-) on the gears and they are correctly lined up. If i remove the top cap or the shifter the problem goes away, i've replaced a lot and not sure what i should try next.

Re: rebuilding Bravo III

what would normally be the first thing to go bad while driving with the drive in the trailered position?

if you remove the top cap and your problem goes away.... then there's your problem... your bearings races are either not seated right or the bearings have to much preload on them.
