I'm wondering what goes bad in a carb that
requires a rebuild. The kits are expensive
and the old parts don't look worn out. Can't
the old parts just be cleaned? I'm working
on an old Merc carb from the seventies.
What should I look out for? Thanks.

Re: Rebuilding carbs

Search around this site about rebuilding carbs. As long as nothing is scored and the brass fittings aren't deformed (wallered out) you should be able to clean them up for about 5 bucks in gaskets and 5 bucks in cleaner. I just did it on my 76 85HP and they look great. Then I did the SeaFoam thing as well to make sure everything else got cleaned out. You can find that under the Decarb FAQ's.
