1967 Chrysler 45HP mdl45781 Type B Two stage with glass sediment bowl.
Bought the rebuild kit and had some problems removing the press fit fuel pump valves. Who ever did it last time used permatex on the gaskets and I broke one. Got a new one coming however I noticed that the gaskets on the valves were broken and after trying to replace them I can see why. I cant seem to get the gasket to fit around the valve without tearing it. Any Ideas? Also the screwed in valve has a brass collar. Will I have a problem if I press fit one of these brass collar valves instead of of using a chrome plated one. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Re: Rebuilding fuel pump

I was realy hoping someone with better knowlage on this pump would step-forward, so I refrained from a reply until now.

I wish I could help you, but I never werked on one one with a glass sediment bowl on it.
As far as the gasket tearing, there must be a bur on the valve. If not, perhaps a flowable gasket material like "right Stuff" or Permatex would werk, but you would need to be very clean with the application.

This might explain why the previous wrench used Permatex (nothing else would werk at that time). Today, we got Copper based silicones and new car makers using tubes of stuff instead of paper or fiber gaskets in engine assemblies.
I had a simular problem with a finicky fill screw on a lower unit. Every time I would torque-down on the screw, the gasket would twist, then squish-out the side.
I found it had a beveled crown. I replaced the screw with a standard stainless screw from the local hardware store, and the problem went in the trash can with the old screw.
So check the seat of the valve cavity, and the flange on the valve itself for any burs or tapers that shouldn't be there. Outside of that, I'm lost.
Good luck.

Re: Rebuilding fuel pump

Thanks for the reply 12 footer. I bought the rebuild kit from napa 18-7806 and can see there is no way to get the gasket around the fuel pump valve without it tearing. It does look like the original gasket has the same OD however the ID is larger as well which would make the opening larger. I ordered new gaskets when I ordered the new valves. I got to think they will fit. If I cant get it to work Twin City outboard thinks they may have one I can buy for 25 to 30 dollars. He sounded a little unsure when I mentioned the glass sediment bowl.
