rebuilding Mercarb

I just rebuilt my Mercarb and have a couple of questions:

1. The carb had the porous metal fuel filter in the body of the carb (what's that called - "sintered metal" or something like that?). The kit came with the fine mesh screen type of filter. What's the consensus as to which is better to use? I will also be installing a fuel / water separator as well.

2. Measuring the float level and drop.
I realize this is a fairly straight forward and easy procedure, and understand that I need to measure from the surface of the gasket to the toe of the float. BUT - while the measurement is fairly exact (1 3/32" for the float drop. Anytime a measurement is given in 32nds of an inch, that is pretty precise!) - The actual place on the float is less precise. It mentions the "toe." This float, and the one in the carb, simply has a gradual rounded front. No exact "toe" to which to measure. There is supposed to be a mark on it... but I do not see one.

I measured the best I could and I will see how it performs, but if I have to disassemble and redo I would like a little more guidance. (And for those familiar with these carbs, I am using the solid need - not the spring loaded. I will see if it is sufficient).

Ayuh,... Any of those carb filters are 'bout the same, they just stop big chunks of crud,...
Sintered bronze,...
Plastic screen,...
Paper element,...
Don't matter,.... Especially since yer addin' a canister type filter,...
