Hi guys, I bought this boat from one of my dad's friend. The engine is a Mercruiser 165 Inline 6 from 1979. The engine has never been rebuilt and it needs some love.

An old guy in my town is rebuilding engines. My only concern is that he told me that he's not using marine parts, only that some parts like the manifold and cam need to be marine.

I would like to know if this is true and if I should go with him to rebuild the Mercruiser!

Yes for the most part but no for two items. So long as he is rebuilding only the block and nothing else such as starter, alternator, distributer, etc then no issue. Only things that needs to marine is the head gasket and freeze plugs (brass type).

Note: also should be posted in the Merc section, it's in the electric section

Will see if GA_Boater will move

In the M/C section now.

mastergat - What AllDodge said. The motor will need a marine head gasket and brass freeze or casting plugs.

I'm sure he will get the gasket kit at a local auto parts store. Let him do that, but you can buy the marine head gasket and casting plugs yourself for him to use.

If you get the serial number off the motor, I'll prowl around the parts bin to see what you need.

Thanks! I already tried to read the serial but the block is so dirty and old, I can't see it.

I've searched for the head gasket and the freeze plugs, it's all located in the USA and can't or will but at a crazy price ship to Canada. Do you guys know another place to get parts in Canada at a decent price?

Sure don't but search here for folks rebuilding their own 165, they will have a handle on where is the best place. Then again they are in the USA

Mastergat were are you located? I would think any good auto parts store could get you brass core plugs. And maybe even a marine head gasket. If you run in fresh water I wouldn't hesitate to run a good quility auto head gasket!

Hi, I live in Quebec province, I will always be on fresh water. I'll call Napa tomorrow for the core plugs! You sure about an auto head gasket??

That presents a problem with the Canadian shipping prices and surcharges. I don't know of any Canadian suppliers. Sorry.

I did note you boat in fresh water, so with that the marine gasket is a good thing, but not near as much as in fresh water

I believe the FelPro head gasket for that is a 17019 and the Sierra/Napa is a 18-3881
Sierra/Napa Bronze core plugs are 18-5961 for the 1-5/8" and 18-5962 for the 1-3/4"

A marine shop that sells Sierra should be able to get Sierra engine parts as well.

Hi guys, so I started the removal of the block, I got some questions as to what to disconnect/remove to be able to lift the block. Can you point to me on the pics what is left? Also, I found out that some freeze plug on the block are rusted to the point that they are blown, does that mean that some damage has been done to the engine to the point of no return even with a rebuild? Thank you!!

Freeze plugs can be replaced, cheap parts and are done when rebuilding. They can also be replaced because their rusted, replace with brass ones.

Thanks AllDodge for your help!

Ok, for the rear motor bolts, are you talking about those 2?

So, for the elbow, I remove the 4 nuts and loosen up the collars, do I need to pry hard to lift it? Because I tried by hand and it won't move.

Is there anything else that I need to remove or there's only those 2 baby remaining to lift the block?
