The trim cylinders are leaking on my 1978 Mercury 140hp 6 inline outboard, allowing the engine to drop to its full down position. How easy is it to rebuild the cylinders, and where can I get a rebuild kit? Unfortunately, my Clymer shop manual only addresses electrical problems and how to bleed the cylinders of air... but it doesn't get into how to rebuild them.

I had same problem..... had luck replacing o-rings with new from local rubber and gasket shop.....been told that rebuild kits for cyls were not available anymore for my 81 model......the only problem you might have would be if actual seal on piston of cylinder was bad..... mine had a telfon type seal but it was fine.... was only 1/2 hr per cylinder or so to do.....good luck

I just did a pump that the pilot check valves were leaking on a 1986 150 merc. The problem is getting parts from dealer, Comments were you have to buy new pump, too old, dont have time to look for numbers, It took a few calls, I got lucky and found what I needed. I would check on seal kit from merc first.
