Can someone with experience doing this let me know if this is something a home mechanic can tackle? Gearcase is in bad shape and needs new gears/completely rebuilt, just grinds makes awful racket when putting it in gear. Is this something someone wholistic pretty decent with tools can handle, done a lower on small seahorse before, but nothin this new or large, but would like to try.

Thanks racerone. My lower assembly is part 435277..which is a one piece design. I think I pick up a 1989 unit cheap, but it is a two-piece design, a bit different than mine, but the inner and outer exhaust housings on my motor and potential donor, where foot bolts on are same across those years. Question is will this older design foot work as a bolt on? Also, gear sets and prop shaft from both gearcases use same part #...how difficult would it be to tear my down and use these donor parts to rebuild, if I can't do a straight bolt on. This older style foot is 100 bucks vs the 600 I saw for one that is exactly same as mine, that's why I'm asking... .

What do you mean by a 2 piece design ???---------------You need to shop carefully here as there were changes made in the late 80's and early 90's.----Only an 89 to 92 will likely fit yours.---A 2 piece design ??? will never fit !!!

Correction on my above post... on my 1993, not 92. Also, this site won't allow link to site with parts explosion, so link above not working.
