I've got an 81 trophy 21' hardtop cuddy cabin that the transom is rotting out on. i have been reading all the posts on doing this myself and am planning on tackling this this fall. the problem is i dont have a shop large enough to do the work inside and I live in the seattle area. i'm concerned about curing times being affected. is there anybody out there that does this as a profession? I know it would be cheaper to do myself but I don't want to miss the summer fishing season. the deck on this boat is one piece fiberglass that needs to be removed to access the stringers and transom.

lingcod

Re: rebuilding transom

OK, i got a "quote" of anywhere between $1800 and $4000 dollars. I don't think this is gonna work. I'm not even gonna try to run this one by the boss lady. my next question is, can I rent a storage space for this project? I'm not sure if they'll let me do this type of work in a rented storage unit. any suggestions?

lingcod

do it in stages rent a work space at a boat yard for a couple different weekends and use wood chisels/prybars /circular saws set to proper depths/ flapper discs on 4 1/2 grinders etc to grind it all out ,,,,then cut new wood and epoxy it in ,,,experiment on scrap wood with epoxy ,,,,it is real easy actualy....

You could do the work at your place. You could get one of those portable shelters, do the demo work, and when you go to glass in your new structure you can tarp it off with a heater inside to bring the temps up to kick the resin off. I had to do it that way when I did my project, I was doing it in North Idaho in the spring, not exactly the warmest place on earth. It turned out just fine. Good luck.

what kind of temps do I need to get to? I think I could probably get to a consistant 60 maybe 65 but I dont think I'd get any warmer than that. would one of those white carports be adequate? I know they make them with walls and a door. as for a heater, wont I have to worry about the fumes?

lingcod

Yes, get one of the Costo covers, it will work great. 60* to 65* will be fine, you can just open it up if the fumes get too bad. By the time you start doing the glass work the temps will warmer.

There are a couple of good places in your area to get all of the supplies, epoxy or polyester and the glass. Then go to Harbor freight for the tools.
Read the books, watch the tapes, get dirty.
