I have lots of auto engine experience, but little marine. I need to rebuild or purchase rebuilt powerhead for a 1991 Force 120 hp L-drive (lost compression on two cylinders). When rebuilders on net indicate core exchange, what exactly defines the limit of the "core" for this engine? Any "land mines" I need to avoid or tips on change out of this engine/drive?

Re: rebuilt powerhead

before you take the dive you might ask yourself if the low compression was on cylinders next to each other? (blown head gasket)

Or might try a good decarb spray process.

Perhaps one or the other might help and they wouldn't cost much to try.

Gary,

The "core" refers to the block and the head. Everything attached to the block needs to come off. Carbs, flywheel, fuelpump etc. The only thing you send is the the block and its internal parts and the head. Try Seiler marine they have good prices with a one year warrenty on rebuilt powerheads. Just got one from them a few months ago for my 86 force125. Everything turned out fine and she runs great. Good Luck

One more important fact. Make sure you find the reason you lost two cylinders and correct the problem or you will be right back where you started.
