Rebuilt starter wrong one?

My starter slowly began to show weakness. After a intake hose went,(raw water salt), it really puttered out.
I did all the proper checks, and it was the starter.
I removed it and took it to Don's Auto electric to size up.
I installed the rebuilt one and noticed sizeable gaps towards the fly wheel housing.
Turn it over and nothing but spinning action. I bench tested it and it's throwing out.
Perhaps it wasn't a bargin.
Block number is OL379908

It's getting cold in Rhode Island and I have to winterize.

THanks for your help.

What vintage is the engine?
Pre-'86 5.7 used a 12?" flywheel, post '86 used a 14".
The starters will be in a different position, not sure if they're compatible.

Re: Rebuilt starter wrong one?

I'm not sure what year the enigine is, the hull is a 1994 Bayliner and the block number is OL379908. I checked the flywheel and there's no flat spots or serios wear.

After reading more about auto parts on marine engines, I goofed. Should have gone to the source and got the right starter for the enigine.

Anyone have a year for this block and the correct starter?

THanks.
