I have the super-special 1983-84 hybrid Mercruiser R/Alpha I outdrive. The upper is Alpha I and the lower is R. After great research an multiple attempts to find the appropriate parts, I rebuilt the fried water pump. Before the outdrive pump failed everything was working fine throughout the system. Water came in through the outdrive went through the engine, and back out through the exhaust. Now the water does not circulate through the engine. I know it is making it to the upper part of the outdrive as I took off the top cover to look at the gears and did not seal it well when replacing. It seeped out around the cover. If there was enough pressure, through muffs or pump, water should have made it into and out of the engine.
If this situation sounds familiar to anyone, and they resolved the issue, please let me know what you did. I will be disconnecting the water line at the transom tomorrow to see if there is possible blockage within the engine system. Direct connection to the hose should provide enough pressure to move water through that part of the system even without the engine running. Thanks for your time and expertise!
