I have been following posts related to tach troubles as I have/had one, 98 175 merc efi, seemed to run fine last outing but at wot it made a stumble for a heartbeat, tac went berserk from 5600 down to 4000 engine still wot tac stayed at 4000 boat still at gps speed. reading the posts, I swaped the wires on the rec/reg modules and will give a try this weekend, question if this corrects the problem do I need to change out the old module Great information from you folks and very helpfull Thanks

Yes, but I'd check all the battery lead connections first.. Positive and negative.

By check he means open the connections and inspect for corrossion, cleaning and shining as necessary and reinstalling.

What is the Merc SN of your engine. Not sure why those parts would be NLA, superceded maybe or possibly a service bulletin on them.

Quicksilver tach for the son's '95 150 was only $88 from the dealer and it matches his other instruments. When they start acting goofy, if the regls don't fix it, and the terminals are clean, time to update the tach. We walked the walk and the new tach finally solved the problem.

Re: Rec/reg modules

Want to thank all for the help, problem was the stator and modules, probable cause was connection plugs deteriorated and built to much resistance on the read between the units, found them to be burnt pretty bad, changed out my parts and it runs liked greased lightning once again, again many thanks to all, Danny
