recently had the short block on my 1993 70hp evinrude rebuilt. After letting the motor idle for a total of about 2 hrs with the water phones on it in the drive way, we would run it for a while, then shut it down, run it etc with brand new gas & oil mixed per the engine builders specs. I finally had a chance to get the rest of the boat wet and check it out. The lake is a no wake lake and the boat performed good until it had been driving a round for a while at basically idle with the forward gear engaged. It would then sputter and die. You would have to crank it a couple times and then it would start then maybe die, then if you got on it a little as soon as you got it started, it would run fine for a while then repeat.

Upon returning home and hooking it backup to the water phones it took a couple cranks to start then ran good. After checking everything including the plugs my only guess is I was not running it at a high enough rpm to burn off the fuel bein injected there for causing the carbs to load un and choke the engine. Can anyone else offer input?

Sounds like it was loading up as you suggest from low rpm trolling .Were you running the vro oil system in addition to some extra TCW3 in the fuel tank, for break-in?If so this would also help contribute to the symptom.Carbs linked and synched following the work performed? Those 3 cylinder 70's don't like being trolled at low rpms for long anyway ,let alone if the idle mix or the oil to fuel ratio is rich for break-in.

Are you running new factory recommended Champion plugs.

Re: Recent Rebuild 70hp evinrude

no vro mixed according to the rebuilders instructions 16oz to 6 gallons of gas. yes double checked the plugs and the setup on it..the vro is what is believed to have caused the original engine failure so on the rebuild took it out. Like I said at pure idle it runs great and even after it loaded up on once it fired and sputter a little it would idle again until we started the slow troll again...any one see a reason other that I would be unsafe to put in on a real lake and actually run it @ no more the rebuilders suggestionof 3/4 throttle for a tank or two to help finish the break in?
