Early to mid 90s evinrude 25 hp 2 cylinder. Need the blue plastic pawl on the underside of the recoil starter. Anyone know if thar part is available separately? Part number? This is the plastic piece that flips out to engage the flywheel. Thanks

If all else fails, hit up your local marine parts supplier, they should be able to look that up and let you know. The big dealer/ parts marina in my area still have acess to older parts microfitch sheets. They seem to be able to find anything I have ever looked for.

Early motors used only 1 pawl.----A tough job for one pawl.-----So they went to 2 pawls.----Recoil was also mounted with rubber mounts so thar housing could flex and share load on the 2 pawls.-----I recommend you use 2 pawls, but it is up to you to act.

After 1984 they went to 2 pawls.----As you have found one pawl is not hefty enuff.-----Also make sure rope is correct length to time the pulley !!-----The sheave is oval for a reason.

Ok I fixed the recoil installed 2 new pawls and 3 missing wires that connect the pawls. When I pull the rope handle the rope pulls out around 5 inches or more before making engagement with flywheel. Is there a way to shorten the distance the rope has to be pulled before it engages the flywheel?

Did you time the recoil ?----See the arrow on the housing ?-----See the simple instructions on the sheave ?.

I had a problem with my last one and it had to do with the nut tension or something. When you had it off did you look to see if the pawls were coming out instantly?

Sorry I forgot what I did but it fixed that.

This recoil assembly is " timed " to take advantage of the eliptical sheave !!-----Do not go changing the length of the roped by guessing.

Post #12----I believe it is clear when you look at the parts.----And do not worry about when pawls engage relative to how far the rope is pulled..

Ok. I loosened the half inch bolt on the underside and moved the sheave counter clockwise until the arrow was pointed at the words arrow here. Then retightened the bolt. Seems better now

The idea here is that at compression the elliptic sheave moves the rope outwards from center.----Gives you a mechanical advantage.----Something used for 40 years or more on this style of recoil.
