Anybody know what parts will interchange with this Sea king 5.5hp or where to find parts for this motor like the recoil starter. Or know the part number for the recoil starter? I seen what looked like a Johnson the other day that had a recoil starter nearly in the same place as this sea king but I don't know if there was a difference in the size. Also the recoil on the sea king looks like it pulls from the bottom of the spool (considering the location of the pull rope hole) instead of the top like the 1970 9.5hp Johnson does. I pulled a compression check on the little motor and got 65lbs on both cylinders, I guess that is a fair reading but not good. I started her up using a power drill and ran it for a little bit it run decent for what little bit I ran it but I will need to check out the cooling system.

While I'm at it, does the power head need to be removed on this motor to get to the impeller? I'm thinking it does.

Your year Sea King was made by Chrysler, and is totally unrelated to Johnson or Evinrudes. So think Chrysler when looking for parts. There is a guy here on this forum offering free Sea King manuals. Check him out.
I really don't know if the powerhead has to be removed or not, but I very seriously doubt it.

I don't recall seeing any plate to get to the shift rod on that mootor, I'll look again. I am dealing with a horse of a different color now so .

Heck I don't know if I really need a manual other then if it lists the part number or not. Thinking that the Johson 5.5hp had hardly anything to it, well this little Sea King has basically a power head, a flywheel, still haven't figured it out right yet but I guess that would be a fuel pump :D, and a baby carburetor.

Thanks for the help FR.

Not being familiar with it, I would suspect that maybe the shift rod connector is accessed by dropping the lower unit down about an inch. Strictly a guess, mind you.
EDIT: Or, I suppose you would have seen this, but a lot of Chryslers had an exposed shift rod turnbuckle nut on the front of the motor leg.

Thanks again for the input FR. I'll check out the shift rod connection sure enough if the weather permits.

Boy it makes me mad that I didn't stop by the previous owner's house earlier and see if he might of had that recoil starter after all. When I bought all these motors I had gotten confused about a starter and I thought that one of the motors I bought had an electric starter to go with it. Turned out that none of my new to me motors were electric start so I don't know where the electric starter that the old man had in his hand fell in to place. Maybe just maybe he was originally talking about the recoil starter for the Sea king instead of the electric starter but I don't recall seeing it around where the motor was sitting.
