Hello, my friend has a 27ft pontoon boat with a 2004 johnson 140hp 4 stroke. It has a 17 pitch prop and he believes that he could get more performance out of it with a different prop. Any suggestions for a new pitch prop?

Re: recomendations on new prop

Need more information to help. What is the WOT RPM? That is really the key to changing your prop. If you are running within the limits of the manufactures WOT RPM then there isn't much you can do with props. If you are not within the limits then changing props can help you get there. The higher the pitch the harder it is to turn in the water. To raise the RPM at WOT you need to go to a smaller pitch prop. Hope that helps a little.

Also, what does he consider 'performance'? Hole shot or Max speed? They are mutually exclusive.

Read the stickies at the top of the page. Also check out the helps at the top and bottom of the prop store page. What would he like to accomplish? We need the present prop size, material, max rpm and speed ,typical load, activities.Selecting a prop is like picking a single gear in a car to do everything there are comprimises.
