I have for two seasons bought the Sea Sense (or whatever) from Wally World and they both lasted exactly one season. They are crap.

The S.O. just gave me a gift cert for Amazon so I would like to buy a pump that will last.

Help me out Hive Mind....

Thanks

I have always used Rule with no problems. Get the automatic float switch if you have enough extra cash. You wont regret it.

^^^ what he said! And if you don't have the extra cash for the float, find the extra cash.

Rule makes a fully auto pump, w/o the need for a seperate switch. It checks for water every 3 minutes. They are about $60 for 500GPH. If you use that pump, the bilge will always be dry.

Seasense is garbage. If you have a 3/4" t/hull discharge, a Rule 800 with a Rule-a-Matic float switch. If you have an 1 1/8" discharge, a Rule 1500 with the same switch. I'm am NOT a fan of the automatic pumps with the built in switches...

We used them several years ago in saltwater enviroment and the electronics in the auto pump didn't last a year. Rule rules when coupled with an external float switch.

I just ordered a Rule and an external float switch. Very affordable.

Honestly I had'nt even thought of a float switch. I had always just used a switch.

Thank you all very much for the information!

Rail,
Here's a little diagram that shows how to wire the pump and float correctly...

Re: Recommend me a bilge pump

Rule pumps are good, no doubt about it.

When I did research on which pump to buy for my boat, I found the Attwood 750 gph w/float switch was rated better than the same capacity Rule.

The reasons I went with the Attwood pump over the Rule are:
- pump tests show the Attwood actually pumped more GPH using less amperage. So the pump will run longer. A nice plus if you moor your boat or leave it anchored over night and you are not there.
- Full tinned wire is now standard on the 750 gph and larger Attwood pumps (it wasn't when tested).
- Pumps 750 gph open flow, and 625 GPH at 3.3' head through 3/4" hose outlet. The GPH at 3.3' of head is important, and it beat the competition.
- Was rated best for durability.

Its not the cheapest pump in its class, but I wanted the best rated.

BTW, at the time of the test, which was a few years ago, the only negative was that the pump did not have tinned wire. They now do. I didn't save a link to the report, wish I had. If you search the web, you can find the report, lots of good info in there.

Also, if you have the corrugated hose on the existing bilge pump, consider replacing it with smooth wall tubing because the corrugated stuff cuts down flow considerably. Marine water supply hose is strong and smooth wall and very thick. Also, plain clear hose found at the home center will work too. Just be sure it does not get bent enough to cause partial collapse or kinking.

Re: Recommend me a bilge pump

Mark is correct about typical bilge pump hose. Ribbed inner walls creates a restriction. Switch to smooth walled, like he said. Funny, I've worked for 5 OEM builders, all used smooth-wall hose except for my latest...Pro-Line...
