A post in another thread got me to thinking. My only anchor rides in a locker on the bow. There's no good way to get to it. The easiest is to go out the hatch. It's a PITA on a calm day. Throw in some rough water....

Need some ideas.

Electric anchor windlass you control from the driver's seat maybe? Not cheap, but will work.

Hmmm...

In rough seas you would not want to anchor off the stern - would face your transom against the waves.

You could run the anchor line through the front cleat and double back. Keeping both anchor and line in the cockpit. When you drop anchor the line would then still be coming from the from the water to the front cleat but you'd need to tie it off somewhere.

You could keep main anchor where it is and invest in a smaller spare stowed in the back. A "lunch hook." Two anchors are handy if you wish to keep your boat pointed in a specific direction while anchored.

You could invest in a safety harness. When I had my sailboat I had to go to the bow for both anchoring and lowering the jib. It is not uncommon for sailors to spend a lot of time on the fore deck so safety harnesses are more common. I remember once having the jib jam on the fore stay and needing to jump up and down to get it unsnagged while out on Lake Ontario. That was interesting.

you have my problem and he stated my fix but i cant offord it and you probabaly wont like the cost either. about $1500. for the unit and the shop i went to wanted 30 hours of labor i think. problem is the windlass anchor will bend and twist so they must reinforce and thats only if there is room enough. your boat looks oddly similar to mine a sundowner 225. i keep a spare anchor in the floor next to the engine i have 2 compartments 1 for batterys and the 2nd i put the anchor in.
as for running your anchor line from the bow to the helm if you have chain i would not do that i have 10 foot of chain that would put the anchor 7 foot in the water still if your traveling would damage the hull. also for a boat that size isnt it hard to hold it down with just 1 anchor? if throw 1 anchor in it rarely ever holds good enough once i get 1 foot waves i am gone.

How much anchor line are you putting out? Typically, you want to have 7:1. So, if you're in 10' of water, you'd put out 70' of anchor line. Depending on the conditions, this can be adjusted, but 7:1 is a good starting point. If a 1' wave is lifting your anchor, my guess is that you need to put out more line.

So I've done some searching but haven't found what I'm looking for. Is there a hand-winched anchor setup that I could access from the hatch? Really not wanting to spend $1200 plus to solve this problem.

Re: Recommendations

you could rig up a winch as is used for sheets on a sailboat, perhaps.
Why can't you go out there through the windshield? Isn't that why it opens?

I know you don't want to hear it now that you bought it, but for others looking at that type of boat--there is a lot of unaccessible real estate on the bow. 22' of boat with 10' usable.

The center of your windshield does'nt open???

We put an SS roller anchor davit on our bow so it would'nt have to go in a locker.

Sounds like you need to learn how to properly deploy an anchor. A boating course would help.

As for the original request, the advise to install a windlass and anchor roller/pulpit is the best and correct answer. It will also return the greatest amount of satisfaction and will increase the resale value of your boat.

Re: Recommendations

Absolutely I could go through the windsheild. It's actually much easier to climb out the hatch. But I still need to climb out on top of the cuddy, open the locker and fish out the anchor, then give it a toss.

Bob's...I know how to deploy an anchor...don't be ridiculous.

Home cookin'...I purchased this style of boat because I knew it could handle Lake Erie when it gets angry.

Someone show me a link of the type of setup you'd suggest.

Re: Recommendations

Well if the windless is not in the cards, I guess bolt on a davit and crawl threw the hatch.

Re: Recommendations

You could keep a line from the bow eye over the rail & the windshield to the area around the helm. If you don't want to keep the entire anchor line attached you could have a thimble (eye) at the end to attach the anchor line onto before you drop it. When you are ready to deploy just put the chain & anchor over the side as you drift or back down, this keeps the anchor rode from fouling your prop. If it's windy just let the boat drift back from the deploy point. BTW, plastic crates are very good carriers for anchors, chains & rode.
If you will anchor in varying depths you can put marks on your rode at set lengths so you know how much line is out. Just pull part of the rode onto the boat through those guides on your bow and tie off on a cleat when you need a shallower anchorage.
I have a shorter than optimal length of chain on my anchor (8'), and I have a separate length of chain that I can add for the storm I hope to never be caught in.

Re: Recommendations

If you can't afford a windlass, why not a winch? Look at the Powerwinch line. Not as pretty as a vertical capstan windlass, but they work.

If you don't want either one, an anchor roller on the bow will still make things a lot easier for a couple hundred bucks. You'll deploy and retrieve by hand, but won't have to fish the anchor out of the locker. You'd need one anyway if you ever invest in a winch or windlass

Re: Recommendations

The comment that it 'holds 150' of 3/16" line' leads me to think it's a pretty light duty unit.

I dunno- if I were going to mount something on the bow that noticeable anyway, I think I'd go with a real winch. The Powerwinch option should cost about half the price you were quoted for the windlass install.
