I posted earlier for advice on recovering my old pontoon boat deck, It is all aluminum and in good shape. Boat sits out uncovered May - October and is mainly used for fishing. Group recommended vinyl, rhino, Durabak etc.
I appeciate the help and info.
Well, dang that stuff is high dollar.
By my reckoning for my 8 X 24 deck surface I was looking at $2400 for a rhino spray on parts and labor, $1000 for the Durabak parts only and about the same for vinyl.
So, being a poor man, I went to pontoonstuff and ordered $375 worth of carpet and glue (28oz top of their line).
I was told it will take being hosed off and cleans up with a mild household detergent. I bought a dark color to minimize stain visibility.
Has anyone else in this group been down this road ??
Any "Gotcha's" with the carpet approach ??

Too late now that you ordered the carpet. But the marideck vinyl is reasonable and comes in widths as wide as your 'toon. Search the net for it.

Thanks for the scoop Mark42. I looked them up and my project would price out at $700 and change. Their adhesive is listed for wood surface only so I am not sure if I would have needed a special adhesive for my aluminum deck.
Now I need to call Pontoonstuff and see if their adhesive (which I ordered) works on aluminum.
Thanks again

dark is good for stains but it also gets hotter than a lighter color carpet. I know this is a big deal with vinyl, not sure if it's as big of an issue with carpet.

Re: Recovering Deck aka The Money Pit

I have a LineX bed liner in my 2007 Ford F150 Crew Cab which has the smaller bed and it ran me $450. I'm also a musician and build my own road cases and amplifiers. Did a single 12" speaker amp the size of large suitcase and LineX on it ran me $150.....it ain't cheap..... So when the need came to build some raod cases for our PA speakers I used the Herculiner DIY stuff. Good but messy and lot's of fumes. Just built a road case for a vintage Fender tube amp and used the Plasti-Kote DIY bed liner. It's acrylic based and cleans up with water until it dries, then it can't be removed except by scraping. The Plasti-Kote can be found at Wal-Mart for $50 for a kit and $42 for additional gallons.

Long story made longer...I'm looking at using it on my trailer fenders and steps, and also on my front and rear casting decks. Since it's acrylic based, I'm going to experiment with tinting the default black color with a little acrylic white paint to get a nice gray color for the decks. I'll try it on another piece of fiberglass first to see if it affects the overall mixture out of the can.

Thanks all, for the scoop. I did call Pontoonstuff and they told me their carpet adhesive works on aluminum decks. Good thing, the adhesive arrived a couple of hours after I called them. I like their quick turnaround and free shipping policy. Carpet is supposed to arrive end of this week.
Now, got to round up my boys and convince them to spend a beautiful Saturday morning in the boat carpet business (smile,,,,)
