Just replaced stator and power pack on 1987 120 looper,had a spark issue seems to have fixed.Question is should I replace regulator/rect. dont know if it could be bad or cause new stator to go bad can afford that wife would kill.tack works sometimes then will quit then work again understand it runs off rect/regulator.

You tach runs off the stator. Thoses same wires also feed the rectifier and that is why the connection is made there. If you can monitor the battery voltage you might get an idea if it is the rectifier failing or the tach itself going.

It's probably not worth the risk to run with a questionable rectifier. If the rectifier diodes fail, and if the wiring fuses inside the rectifier's potting, it can allow battery voltage to reach the stator and damage it. Worse, the rectifier can and sometimes does catch fire.

As a minimum, you should check the rectifier base to be sure that it is clean for the cooling water, bench test, and check the wiring and connections.
