I have a 3 wire rectifier and checked it with an olm meter per J. Reeves' instructions(black on ground, red terminal to the leads then reverse, red on ground, black terminal to the leads. I come up with no reading on the yellow/gray wire!

If no reading on the yellow/gray wire in either direction, the diode is blown.

Can I check my stator output with my multimeter even though my rectifier appears to be bad?

You need a peak-reading voltmeter to check either the stator or the timer base. You need an adapter to make your voltmeter work.

I need to check my stator too. I have a multi meter. Will that work?

I had the same thing happen to me. The only tip I have is to grind the contacts up so they are really clean. This helped me get a more stable reading (even though it still ended up being bad).
