i have a 1977 evinrude 55 hp model number 55el77d. everything says its a johnson. now here comes the fun part. it needs a new rectifier so i got on ebay and bought 1. the boat is set up with a four wire 1 red, 1 yellow, 1 yellow with blue stripe, 1 yellow with silver stripe. and the sticker on the block verifys the color code and order to place on the block. the one i got on ebay has 4 wires, 1 red, 2 yellow 1 yellow with a blue dot, and a blue dot on the rectifier next to the yellow wire with the blue dot. so how do i know which wire goes were. meaning the 2 yellow wires with no color.

now i got on the evinrude part diagram page and my model number dosnt match any evinrude numbers, so i looked under johnson and that has my model number. but it shows a 3 wire rectifier.

please help would like to figure this out. thank you for the help in advance.

Re: rectifier help

One of the wires running to your terminal block from the flywheel is gray and yellow, and that will probably connect to the center screw and merge with the gray wire for your tachometer and the yellow and gray wire from your original rectifier. That yellow and gray wire from the flywheel will now connect to one of your yellow wires on the new rectifier.

One of the wires from under the flywheel is solid yellow and that will connect to the other solid yellow wire on your new rectifier.

It does not matter which of the two solid yellow rectifier wires you connect as long as they are connected to either the solid yellow wire or the gray and yellow wire from under the flywheel.

Re: rectifier help

There are two types of rectifiers, as you have figured out. The big question is how many yellow or yellow/striped wires come from under the flywheel. From your description it seems there are 3. So, if that is true, you need a 4 wire rectifier (4th wire goes to the battery), which it seems you have. Now, the truth is, it really doesn't matter which yellow wire from under the flywheel goes to which yellow wire on the rectifier. The rectifier sez they all look alike to it. And they are. It is a 3 phase alternator, if anybody knows what that means. What it means is all 3 wires are the same.

Now, the 3 wire rectifier is another story. That brings up another question: Why does your Evinrude have a Johnson model number, and why doesn't that model number match the parts book? Somebody has been doing a switcheroo on the data plate....or the powerhead...or whatever. Sounds like you have an authentic Johnsonrude of unknown year.
