Is there any way to test threw a rectifier to tell if it or the diodes are shot?

Yes! The service manual explains this very well, not hard to do at all. You will need an ohm meter, or continuity light.

Count on it--it's damaged. You can't disconnect it fast enough to avoid destroying the rectifier.

Re: Rectifier question?

Go ahead and order the new one. You have let the smoke out of that one. When you get down to it the failure is instant on a reverse hook up. The diodes are built to handle up to twice the charging amperage of the system but when one hooks up backwards you get 400 to 800 amps of energy for an instant. Then you have an open circuit.
