I have a 1979 merc 200hp I tested the rectifier for resistance and found improper values. Would this cause this motor to just shut off and not fire anymore?I checked the stater and triger and ignition....all ok. Please help!!!

Re: rectifier???

No, but a short in the wiring harness would...

Check for continuity between the wires in the harness...

Re: rectifier???

Do you have a 200 (20 HP) or a 200 HP V6?

Re: rectifier???

The motor should run (have spark) with no harness hooked up because the older non-EFI motors had a magneto-style ignition that fired when the black/yel lead in the harness was removed from ground. This lead grounds when you turn off the key. Cech w/ ameter to make sure the black/yel lead on the switchbox is not grounded when the harness is unplugged. If it is then the mercury tilt switch (aptly named!) is shorted or a wire is pinched to ground or a switchbox is defective.

Re: rectifier???

(1)if one switchbox is defective will the other have no fire either? I asumed that if one was bad I would still get fire to the other side of the engine.(2) also the rectifier fails on the check from--out of the book "connect the black ohmmeter lead to ground and the red lead alternately to terminals A and C the ohmmeter should show no continuity" I'm getting no reading on A and a reading on C, Thanx, and I'll check on that ground,(3) what does it cost to get the switch boxs checked?

Re: rectifier???

If 1 switchbox is so melted inside that the blk/yel lug is shorted to ground internally then you would have no spark on either. Rectifier is bad if the lugs A & C are the ones the yellow stator wires go to. Don't know of a test for the switchbox except the process of elimination by testing all the other ign. parts that can be tested. The switchbox is usually replaced as a test and they do have a reputation for failure (in direct proportion to how nice the weekend weather will be). I replaced my switchboxes & rec./reg with aftermarket ones from CDI/Rapair. They work great!

Re: rectifier???

CDI/Rapair not repair they do not sell direct.
Get a #194-5279 that will replace both the rec. & reg. Must find a place to mount it though. I mounted mine on top between the heads.

Best prices at:
http://www.seilermarine.com

Re: rectifier???

allright I unhooked the blk/ylw wires from the switchbox and got fire to one side, then I switched boxes and just got fire to the other side... so it was a switchbox that was grounding the system. I had never dug in this boat like this before thanx to your replies you have helped me understand how the system works, and now finaly, my problem is solved! Thanx again guys (and gals) keep the board rollin and the props turning!

Re: rectifier???

check ebay for switchboxes, if you order an aftermarket one from CDI you will have to replace both to match them up or the timing will be different. If replacing 1 get a merc part. Good job!
