how can i test to see if my rectifier is bad? and what problems would it cause if it were bad? thanks

A rectifier allows current to only flow one way. If you take an ohm meter it will read a resistance one way and open (infinite resistance) the other way.

Another possibility is to take and connect it in line with a small light bulb. One way the bulb will light, the other it will not.

What a bad rectifier will do depends on how it is used. Can you describe?

Agreed need to know how it's used. If part of your charging system to charge batteries(true rectifier), between coils on a twin cylinder engine to prevent back feed on the kill wires(diode), or on a switch to isolate a circuit(diode)?

These all are common uses and have different ways to trouble shoot.
