So my boat, a 1984 SportCraft, is that wonderful 'tan' color from the early-mid 80's.

I was at WM, and they had 2 quarts of red topside on clearance for $7 (for both). Couldn't pass that up! Now, WTF do I do with it? I was thinking of removing the worn out blue & gold(ish) stripes, and then paint them back in red. I also thought about painting a (thick) red stripe just below the rubrail, like Sportcraft did in later years. (An example with a green stripe here, here, and here) In both cases, I can't really tell if it will look good/ok. Anyone want to throw out some suggestions or opinions? A couple of pics of the beast are below...

Re: Red?

While I really like the red stripe on the boat below, I wouldn't recommend this motif for yours:

Re: Red?

I like it the way it is, maybe it needs a deep cleaning to remove stains.

Re: Red?

Yeah, she needs a full compounding and polish. Hard to do on a lift, though. Once the water gets warm enough, I'll do it from in the water. Hmm.... standing in the water with an electric buffer... Darwin Awards here I come!!!

Re: Red?

Personal preference - I just don't care for Red on boats. I love red sports cars, just not boats. I'd clean it up, buff it out, sell the paint. If you get a deal on a dark green or dark blue, then I think you have something. Again, just an opinion, and we all know what they are compared to!

Striping and accents are normally done with plastic tape, the kind used for pinstripe on cars. It comes in thick and thin widths and in lots of colors. You can also order online any size or color desired. If this is all you want to change on that boat, use tape. If you want to paint the hull all over, post back, likely in the restoration forum.

I think the red would look good with that tan if it is more of a maroon color. But I also agree that pinstiping (even 2-3 in ches wide) is better done with vinyl than paint.
