I'm running a friends boat with twin 5.7's, and I'm not sure where the safe maximum is, neither does he.
These motors are 10 years old, and have been used very lightly...at least for the last 6 years or so. Not positive what the previous owner did, but there was nothing about the boat to indicate abuse when my friend bought it.
I don't think we've ever gone past 3800, but I'd like to from time to time if it's safe. What's reasonable?
