Redo stringers on roller trailer?

I'm picking up the pieces of my project, and trying to figure out what to do next. I have to replace at least part of my stringers, as they're rotted out.

I remember reading here somewhere that you shouldn't replace stringers while the boat sits on a roller trailer.. I tried looking in the search engine, but I couldn't find the reference... anyone know if this is the case?

Thanks,
Erik

If you leave the boat on the trailer there is a very good chance the hull will flex around the rollers or bunks. You should support the hull from severel points and make sure it is in the correct shape even with you walking around in it before doing any glass work.

NO take it off the roller trailer. The rollers slightly deform the hull and this deformation will stay when you install the new stringer. If it was a bunk trailer that would be OK.

Re: Redo stringers on roller trailer?

Before I installed the stringers, I straight-edged the bottom of my 18-footer that is being redone on a roller trailer. Absolutely no deformation at the rollers. BUT, I had completely gutted the boat to the point where I could lift either end of the boat by myself. There simply wasn't enough weight to the bare hull to deform along the rollers. I had my wife stand in the boat at several points and she was able to make it flex a little here and there around the rollers (and, no, I am not dumb enough to tell y'all how much she weighs...) but the hull returned to shape as soon as she stepped off. So, unless your hull weighs a lot or your doing it piecemeal with the deck and hardware in place (adding to the weight), you may be alright doing it on a roller trailer... Also assuming the hull is built well and retains its shape without internal supports...

Ayuh,......... I'm with Chinewalker,.....

Whether you're working On a trailer, or On the Floor,.....

Checking with a straight edge is Mandatory either way......

You've Got to support the hull,+ keep it In-Form,...... Regardless of Where you're working.....

exelent question .i'm in the same position i will be bracing the entire hull at at least 4 points to correct any sag or force on the bottom.btw have already made the brackets to convert to bunks as 80% of damage on bottom was caused by the rollers:'(

I wouldn’t keep a brand new boat on a roller.

I've seen way too many problems with what roller trailers do to boats.

Do yourself a favor and convert to a bunk trailer
