redoing plywood bench seats, polyester resin?

Hi,

I recently bought an '80's Edson aluminum 16' tiller steer, all open fishing/utility boat. It has the typical small triangular bow seat, 2 full width bench seats (aluminum bulkheads with plywood tops), and at the stern has a split seat (one seat in each rear corner), again aluminum framed with a plywood top/seating surface.

I'm in the process of replacing all the plywood seating surfaces with new plywood. I've already bought enough good 5/8" plywood, and my plan was to cut it to the right sized pieces and then brush on polyester resin/hardener mix (same mix as if one was doing fiberglassing) basically paint it on all sides/edges to seal the wood. No matt. Then I'd follow with primer and then paint. I thought I'd use polyester resin because I have some on hand, also it's cheap and readily available at auto parts places.

Sound reasonable? Or should I finish the wood some other way? Will paint stick well to polyester resin coated plywood?

Thanks for your $.02

I used epoxy on my floor durability, adhesion and partly because of the cold conditions over the winter. All my benches are getting done in poly for exactly the reasons you mention. Use a good fiberglass-friendly primer and go at it.
