I know i should probably be running a Deep cycle but i had this new red top sitting around so i figured what the hell....Ive had the boat out twice so far and it seems to be working fine, i run the stereo a lot when the boats not running. I dissconnect the battery when the boats not in use and i try to throw a charge on it before i head out to the lake. Should i switch over to a deep cycle or will this redtop do the job? Im also thinking of installing a premium sound system in my boat with power amp and what not, and this is gonna take up some juice to run so i was thinking i might need to make the switch at that point but would like some advice on this. 85 19" Bayliner with a force 125.

I am not any expert on Optima batteries but I would suppose that a red top would make a fine starting battery for your boat. Using it to power accessories will eventually ruin a fine battery, although I would suspect the Optima might be a little more forgiving than most. Why not go ahead and drop a deep cycle in there? Maybe another Optima, just a blue or yellow top deep cycle?

I just had this battery sitting around and i didnt want it to go bad. I could go buy a blue or yellow top deep cycle but thats gonna set me back 100 or so bucks and also ill be letting this redtop go to waste. Whats the difference between my redtop and a deep cycle?

Check this out:
Optima Optima marine battery Starting vs. deep cycle
There are other places which go into more detail, but suffice it to say that if ever there is a question which is better, if it is used for more than starting alone go for the deep cycle if you have just one battery, and probably even if you run two. Why do ambulances and other emergency vehicles run optima deep cycle batteries for everything including starting? Because they will be there when the chips are down. Plain starting battery simply will not be. Starting battery will give a little more instantaneous "oomph", but the deep cycle will do almost as well, and will stay alive and useable far, far longer when discharged beyond ten percent. Every time you draw a starting battery down below that you're hurting it in the long run. Deep cycles can go down to perhaps 50% before starting to be damaged.

A wild guess says that the main difference between the yellow top and blue top deep cycle Optima batteries (both have light gray case if they are deep cycle) is the location and style of cable attachments. Looks like the marine battery is the only one with screw terminals on top.

Bottom line, can you use a red top? Sure, but it will be damaged in time. The deep cycle will thrive in that useage, but a red top will suffer. The other way around will hardly matter. This is why I still can't understand why (in most cases) people like to use the compromise marine starting/deep cycle combo batteries. They are trading away longevity and getting essentially nothing in return, IMO.

The other thing which may be helpful is to always recharge ASAP when you get back home. Optima batteries hold their charge (disconnected) WAY longer than a regular flooded cell battery, but the prompt recharge will keep the damage from getting a lot worse. A discharged battery is a very unhappy battery.
