Not realy a problem, I am just finishing a full rebuild on my power head and while cleaning the reed valve assembly I noticed that the valves were marked 140 I am assuming this relates to 140hp, if this is the case I just wanted to know if these valves are OK to use on a 125hp motor, having just fitted new pistons, rings and crank re grind I am very keen to protect my investment.

Thanks

Whose pistons did you use? You say you ground the crank....where did you get bearings?

Just curious!

Re: Reed Valves '71 125hp Evinrude

Hi Dhadley

The pistons came from an Evinrude dealer in Kent, my understanding is they came from Evinrude, I tryed to find gineric parts but no one seems to make them for this motor and US suppliers were unable to ship to the UK I ended up paying over £100.00 sterling each for them, the needle bearings were a lot simpler, my local bearing supplier had no problem in getting me .001" over sized rollers. The top crank shaft seal was a pain in the butt. I ended up having to machine the housing and fitted a 50x37x6 seal its a fraction tight on the crank but I dont think I'll have any problems. Back to my post do you think that the reed valves are Ok??

Hi Dhadley,
Thanks for the reasurance on the valves.
As far as the crank goes I hope it will last for a long time,I only had to remove some very slight marks where the rollers had sat still for a long period I took a .001" cut (.002" from the OD) and so the case hardening has not been compromised. I will keep you posted as to how it stands up.
