What could cause reed valves to go beside time ?

On my 75-HP 1998 which was intalled on the boat at the end of summer 1999 and in which there are not much hours on the meter, almost all the reed are way above the maximum spec of gap (0.010'') most of them have like 0.014 to 0.018'' !!! only one cylinder out of 3 where there is only 2 valves too much open, the 2 other cylinders all the reeds have too much gap. Did someone ever try to reverse them instead of replacing ?

Is there anything to prevent that ?

Thanks

Smoky ;)

Re: Reed valves ????

yep
seen a lot of reeds reversed. also seen all of them fail soon after. the reeds for that motor are not expensive. buy a set. usual cause of reed failure on that motor is overspeed. but they can all fail. excessive reed opening will lead to loss of power and funny idle. on the other hand excessive closed preload can cause funny or lack of idle as well. but flipping them is not advisable.
