I am new to iboats and so far it has been very informative and a joy to read. I have a dumb question about reed valves. I have a 1986 Force 125 and so far it runs ok. I am a first time boat owner and I look at the forums to learn. I ran across a picture of a motor without the cowl and it looks like there is a set of metal type boxes in front of the carbs. Mine does not have them. I was searching on ebay for parts and pieces for my boat and motor and saw what I think is the same thing I saw on the motor. The ad was for a set of reed valves. What are they and do I need them? If I do where do they go and is there a good picture or diagram for them?

I am not sure whae you say in front of the carbs what you mean, the reed valves are normally between the motor and the carbs. In order to see them you normally have to remove the carbs and or the intake manifold.

Re: Reed Valves?

Welcome to iboats.

Reed valves or reeds, are kind of a one way flapper that allows the air and fuel to pass from the carb, into the powerhead.

If your engine runs, they are in there.

The boxes you have seen in front of the carbs, are just that, boxes.

Many/most motors never had them.

They can serve as a shroud to prevent debris from entering the carb.
Or they can collect excess fuel that dribbles out the front of the carb.

Not to worry, you don't need the boxes.

In the photo below, 40 are the reeds, 41 is the reed plate they rest in.
