I have two Merc 25hp, 2-strokes and one doner motor. The doner motor threw a rod and I got the whole thing for $50, and all the extra parts I will ever need. Now, one day I took the doner motor apart to find what caused it to die, and to hopefully prevent it from happening to my good motors. When I took it apart I found that one of the reed petals had chipped and ended up in the the lower needle bearing set on the connecting rod and BAM, sent the end right through the crank case. And it was a very small chip. I went looking online and found Boyesen reeds. I read about the fact that if they chip, more than likely it won't kill your motor.....increases power, and better response. The cons are that you have to replace them more often. For me that would be like $40 every two years. I was wondering if anyone here has had experience with them on outboards, and would it a good buy to look into? Are there any disadvantages or advantages to them over the stock steel reeds? How often do people really have problems with stock reeds? Thanks for any input.

Re: Reeds and Reed Questions

People generally do not have reed problems...... the Boyeson reeds are great and many people here have used them........ they do give a better response and I have been using them for years in 2 stroke motorcycles....... I have not had to use them in an OB.

Do a search for Boyeson Reeds here and you will get many results.
