No, fill it with the pump designed to thread onto the drain plug at the bottom.

I guess if you think of the exact definition of "can". Yes, I guess so, but it will probably wont be the best for your outdrive. Until the outdrive lube made it down into the outdrive, it would be running dry. And I'm fairly certain it needs to be running for that to happen anyway (I say this because I can remove the lower unit with the reservoir full and it doesnt leak down).

I am a begginer and have never done this before, but mine leaked down when I took the bottom unit off. Never the less I will fill at the bottom also. There is only an inch or two of capacity from the point of the plug, but what it is is what it is.Thanks for anwering.

Not exactly sure what your asking?

You need to remove the vent plug at the top, should say vent next to it, and remove the bottom draining/filling plug.

once removed, you screw in the pump, and pump from the quart bottle until the lube oils starts to leak out of the vent plug at the top. Then, screw the vent plug back in. The next part is tricky, unscrew the pump, and quickly replace the drain plug. Sure, you're going to lose some, but not much. It should take at least a quart to a quart and a 1/2.

Ensure the reservior in the engine compartment is full. Then, after you've been running the boat for a while, re-check the reservior as it may have put more flued in the outdrive.

Does this help, or am I missing the "?" ?

beatiful. Wow the vent is about 2 feet above the bottome fill, I never would have hung that long. I was going to take it out tommorow. I just put it in at the bottom until it started coming out at the bottom. I did run it for a minute, the lube reservior has stayed at full though, I thought some of it would have headed on down to the drive unit. never the less you explanation was perfect. Thanks

Re: refilling lower unit gear housing

gear housing filling. Well I have dealt with this for a couple of days. I am gonna run it in a few hours. Last call to get it right. As I read, study and restudy, the best result for my stern drive is: Fill reservoir until fluid runs out the vent. I already put some in at the bottom drain also in this process. I have filled the reservoir, raised it up in my hand and blew in it, but I can not get it to come out of the vent. When I initially drained the lower unit, all the fluid from the reservoir seeped on out, so it does move that way. At this point I can only run it and watch the level or.................?

Re: refilling lower unit gear housing

You've missed the point, and don't understand how the system works.

Filling the drive has NOTHING to do with the lube monitor in the engine bay. Filling should be done as follows (That includes if you have taken the lower unit off.)

remove the vent screw from the upper housing. Remove the drain screw from the lower housing. Screw the lube pump into the lower housing and pump lube in until it flows from the vent hole in the upper housing. Fit the vent screw back in. Quickly remove the lube pump and refit the drain screw. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY THE DRIVE CAN BE FILLED. It CAN NOT be filled from the lube monitor bottle.

The lube monitor is exactly that, a lube MONITOR, not a fill point.

It can't be used to fill because the tube running to the drive and the passage between the upper and lower are too narrow for oil to flow freely enough AND for air to transfer the other way at the same time.

Re: refilling lower unit gear housing

RL Gman and Gchris, thanks bunchs for great explanations despite me dense appearing questions. I just wanted to make sure cause I have been known to mess a few jobs up. This except from the manual kept me on the line:
Models with Gear Lube Monitor:
8. Remove oil vent plug and sealing washer (with drive unit in full DOWN/IN position).
9. Fill gear lube monitor bottle with Quicksilver High-Performance Gear Lube. When oil
starts to run out the vent hole (gear lube hose between drive unit and gear lube bottle
becomes filled), reinsert vent plug. Torque to 40 lb-in. (4 Nm).
10. Fill gear lube monitor to ?FULL? line on decal. Lubricate O-ring seal on gear lube monitor
neck with sterndrive oil, to ensure ease of installing and removing cap. Install gear lube
monitor cap. Do not overtighten
