I am replacing the trim pump on a 1987 125 HP outboard, and I was wondering what the procedure is for refilling/bleeding, etc. I have an OEM manual, but for some reason, it only lists the procedure for the L-drive.

if you already have the correct 30w non-detergent motor oil you can just add what you need to the reservoir - you have to cycle it up several times to bleed the air out - keep adding oil until it sounds correct - keep the fill cap off until you get all the oil in and settled - it will look bubbly for a while b/c it's getting the air out. If you want to get all the original oil out you can just let the engine drop from the highest position to the lowest and most of the oil will come flying out of lines and make a nice mess - just did it last weekend on my dad's boat. Mark the hydrolic lines with a permanent marker or some tape so you know which one goes where - don't force any connections in.

Do you use the 30w on all trim pumps, or just the Prestolite? And how do you recognize the Prestolite?

If you have a 125 you have a prestolite.
Fill the oil while the motors down.
Filling it while it's up will possibly push oil up into the electric motor.
The color of oil dictates what you use.
Red is trans fluid or power steering fluid maybe hydrolic oil??
The tan is 30wt.
