Hi all,

I have a '96 Four Winns 240 Horizon that I am trying to get back in shape for the lake. Attached is a picture of the lid to my storage locker in the floor. Can anyone tell me what kind of wood this is and what would be the best way to restore it?

Here is a link to my photobucket album containing the pics.

It's a teak lid. Four Winns used a lot of teak on their boats. When I redid mine I sanded it down real well and put about 6 coats of marine varnish on it but it was in real bad shape... teak oil is the best to use but you will have to recoat every month or so.

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking it was teak, but wanted to be sure. I'll start sanding tonight!

I took all the wood apart to sand it. Should I finish it with the teak oil and then re-assemble or assemble it and then finish it with the oil. I'm thinking I should finish with the oil and then re-assemble, but wanted to get confirmation.

Thanks,
-Jim

If you have it off the boat .. then oil it up :) ..

You will have to oil the wood every so often..so your going to have to get used to oiling it on the boat eventually :) .

YD I believe he means he unscrewed all the wood slats like I did to my swim platform.... Oil it up and reassemble, then you can oil it up together every once in a while to keep it looking good ;)

Yep, that is what I mean.

Ricky, I just got finished reading your restore thread. Wow! Great read and love all the discussion, pictures and documentation that you included. Sorry to hear about the recent failure. Hope you get it repaired soon.

Re: Refinish wood covering storage locker

I just wanted to share the results of my work. This was a really easy project. I sanded down the teak removing the previous paint/stain. I then used teak oil and applied 3 coats to the wood, waiting about 30 minutes between coats. I wiped the excess prior to each coat. I waited 24 hours before re-assembling. I am really please with the results.
