I am refinishing my mohogany/teak swim deck on my pontoon boat. I have it sanded down to wood. What is the best stain, varnish, oil to use? Thanks in advance. Toon-dude

If its teak, you can use teak oil only. You have to re-apply it twice a season but it won't chip and flake off like a varnish would.

Watco teak oil. See here for a before / after. I ran the boards through a planer and sanded the edges, then oiled with Watco teak oil. If you look up a few posts (#264) you can see what the boards looked like before oiling, but after planing.

Many thanks todhunter. . To be clear. The teak oil is ok alone? Nothing else? Do you have to reapply yearly?

Is it mahogany or teak? I never saw a combination. Better find out what it is.

Mahogany sanded smooth would require a mahogany stain from your manufacturer of choice. Then topcoat with 3 coats of Captain's Varnish (marine spar).

If its teak, 3 coats of Amazon Teak Oil. (that's the brand name, not the internet company). If the boat is kept on a trailer in the garage, re-apply yearly. If kept outside, re-apply monthly. If water moored, re-apply 2-3 times a season.

I think teak oil alone will be fine. Follow the directions on the can. JimS123 above has outlined a good oiling schedule, depending on what kind of life your boat lives.

Thanks Jims123. The deck indeed is a combo of teak and mahogany. Every other slat/board. One teak then one mahogany....

Thats different. Have a pic of it? I like teak oil as you don't have to sand and fix varnish all the time. Just a wipe with a rag and done.

That's odd. I'd like to see a picture as well.

If you varnish the teak (yeah it can be done) you won't be happy. If you teak oil the mahogany, I don't know what it would look like cause I never tried it.
