Refinishing steering wheel

My steering wheel is steel with wooden trim and I would like to clean it up. I am guessing the wood is teak. Should I treat it just like regular teak? I don't want a slippery steering wheel.

But you are only guessing it is teak You could sand it smooth and maybe clear coat it...... what was it before?

No idea. I just got the boat. It is an early 80's Wellcraft 196 Sunhatch.
