Refinishing wood deck questions

In process of refinishing a deck that had a very worn out finish with a oil based paint (I think it was oil). About 80% of the is paint worn off and another 10% came off with todays power washing. This is going to be a rainy week so it will take some time to dry out.
What type of finish would you recommend and do you have a name brand that you would suggest I use or not use? (I am on Long Island, NY for any climate consideration.)

Thanks,
Nick

Are you gonna repaint it or stain it?? I don't know much about paint but I would suggest paint that is specifically made for decks. If you are gonna stain it Minwax deck stain is my choice. Followed up by Thompsons water seal.

I'm leaning toward paint because 10% of the old paint is still there.

Thanks,

If you decide to remove that last 10% of paint and go the stain and seal route, we've used Cabot Clear Solution and it looks real nice and holds up well. It comes in different color tints (we used cedar) so you don't have to stain and seal in 2 steps.

Why not pressure wash all of the paint off.let it dry out well and then 2 good heavy coats of linseed oil.......It can then take the rain for years with no problems.Thats how I did my picnic table.Every 5 years I just slap on some more linseed oil/ The thing has been in the weather for 18 years and still solid with no rot.

Re: Refinishing wood deck questions

Thanks guys,
I pressure washed it pretty hard and I don't want to damage the wood any more than I already have. My other option would be a chemical paint remover, but I'm thinking that would be expensive and labor intensive. I just don't have the energy to put too much labor into it. Sanding would hit the screws and remove the finish from them, creating a rust condition.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Re: Refinishing wood deck questions

Thanks again,
This deck is in my backyard about 3.5" above grade level, adjacent to the house and is made from pressure treated wood. I don't know the variety of wood but it is one that is commonly sold at home centers.

Happy Sailing,
Nick
