I usally anal enough to take pics when disassembling but I scewed up and forgot. Also have a manual but it is at a friends house. Its a E10SELCNS 9.9/15HP , has the 15HP carb, and I think it has the shims/exhaust to make it a 15HP.

Carb Kit: Float setup , What do you measure the float from and how to I take the measurement upside down or let it hang?

Fuel pump Kit: I think I have the right way, but while on the bench can someone shoot me a pic of the orientation of the gaskets/diaphrams. Also the kit has a big and smaller spring with plastic ends to sit on the diaphragm. I noticed who ever turned a wrench on the fuel pump kit the last used alittle grease to keep the springs/Plastic ends in place and not flying around while rebuilding/installing. Wasn't alot just enough for me to see and keep the springs and hardware from moving.
Can I use this method? Any hints ?

Water pump kit : Whats the torque on the pump housing bolts? And any hints/tips would be awesome !!!

Thanks,
DamianJP

Hey MWCOVE !

Thanks helps a ton !

Just gotta snag some torque specs for the water pump. I know many people say to do it by feel but Im not that good yet and tend to over-tighten stuff, therefore if it has a torque spec, you best believe its being utilized. Wish I could put a nano chip in my arm to set torque specs and click too, would be awesome.

Thanks dude you tha man!

The OEM manual for my 84 9.9 says to torque the bolts to 60-84 inch lbs.

Tits man...

Thanks little stuff like that is PRICELESS...

Gotta get my manual(s) back from him. Awhile back I snagged 5 random manuals at a garage sale. Nice to have em even though I didnt have the motors yet. 1 of them covers this motor here, cant beat $10 for 5 manuals, little crease here little grease there so what.

Hate to ask again *BUT* whats everyones take on a little bit of grease to hold the small/big springs in place while assembling / installing?

Seems like its SUPER hard to keep the springs and plastic pieces to stay in place without help.

Mabey something other than grease? I need 2 cents gentlemen . :)

Scroll down near the bottom and you will find a fantastic lot about you 9.9. There is also diagrams of your fuel pump in one of the articles. Best of luck. Rick.

Hey Rick

Thanks man... the more info Im armed with the better. Am if your the same Rick I keep reading about, it sounds like you know these 9.9/15's in and out.

EDIT!!! Just checked the site out and man o man it's awesome. Thanks a bunch , but damn it's got me thinking of converting it to short shaft for some strange reason.

In all honesty, this engine will probably grow on me the more I spend money,time and learn about it to were it will enter my endless collection of OB's until eternity or the ocean/lakes/rivers dry up. *BUT* what do you think this motor would fetch within reason.

This motor is worth about $500-$1000 on a sliding scale based on compression and running order now.

*E10SELCNS
*Yes it's 30 years old, but seems to be in great condition despite her age.

* 120 PSI X2 cylinders (Held there for 15mins with no movement)
* Turn key / Smooth threw all RPM ranges (IDLE/HIGH SPEED is Rock and Roll too)
* %100 Spark
* %100 Cooling
* %100 Fuel
* CARB / FUEL PUMP / WATER PUMP / REWIND STARTER done with receipts (About $100 worth)
* Has 15HP CARB and *I THINK* the reed shims / exhaust are the 15HP one's too.

Reasonable amount to start at ?

I don't know if I keep getting lucky when I find older Evinrudes/Johnsons but it seems that the mid 80's and older were like "tanks" and had to really screw up to kill one of these. Parts are from what Iv'e dealt with pretty cheap. Im probably going to keep this motor though, I have 2 55HP 76/77 Evinrudes and a 93 25HP but no smaller motors from J or E. Had a 6 sail master but my nephew blew it up.
This motor will fill this niche perfectly and I hear this 9.9/15 is awesome little motor. And I use the term "Little" very loosely. :)

I guess any motor if taken care of the right way should last anyone a long time without major trouble. Regular service intervals is key and dont wait for a problem to happen all the time, be proactive and search and check.

Thanks guys and sorry for the ramble

Re: Refreshing a 1982 9.9/15

Ran into a small SNAFU...

Fuel pump kit directions said ....

"(6) Position the pump base (A) so the two tabs (B) are located THE WAY THEY WERE ON YOUR MOTOR. Place the base gasket (1) on the pump base. This gasket was not used on older pumps, but should be installed when rebuilding them."

***The pump didn't have a base gasket installed when disassembled nor did my kit from Iboats have it. Whats my next move?

Thanks,

You could either make one or probably order one from a dealer.

Many on this site have forgotten more than I know about these motors. This site is a fantastic place to learn and share knowledge and individual problems are usually addressed by someone with prior experience. I would never have started tinkering with my first motor had this site not been available to me. Rick.

Re: Refreshing a 1982 9.9/15

Strange how some kits have it and some dont. Both were 393088. Crowley's is $17 with that gasket compared to IBOATS $11 but without the gasket. I need to find one not in a kit, I hate to pay $17 for another kit just for 1 gasket. Gonna have to do some diggin' around.

When I got my first motor a 1989 Mercury 150 XR4 Black Max and got a price quote for a carb clean / link n sync / water pump / fuel pump / stator / thermostats. It was something crazy like close to $1000. With the service manual that came with the boat from PO and this site I dug in and have since become a "outboard-junkie". I love engines and anything mechanical and/or eletrical but I like these outboards ALOT!

From ancient to high-tech they all have character and I LOVE to learn about certain outboards with different brands / years / generations and different ignition systems and other bolt ons. Cross referencing part numbers , finding that hard to find part(s) that make a whole project come together. It's all fun to learn, and hopefully I can pass on the help sometimes and answer questions instead of posting them.

With that being said, THANK YOU IBOATS AND EVERYONE HERE !!! :)

Thanks,
DamianJP
