I have a 2006 Glastron MX-175 that has I/0 (Volvo-Penta outboard). It only has about 100 hours on it as outboard was replaced by PO when he didn't winterize.
On my last boating day for the season last weekend, I managed to hit a submerged rock which did hull damage and ripped apart the lower unit--destroyed it. Insurance wants to use a refurbished lower unit while owner of shop where I have boat serviced is recommending new because he doesn't know the vender, hasn't worked with them before. I live in OR. I checked and apparently insurance agencies in OR don't have to use OE parts when one is at fault for incident. I don't have exact numbers, but insurance seems willing to pay the bill at roughly 5 grand with refurbished lower unit, shop says total would come out to about 7200 with new lower unit.
Not sure what to do. Talk to insurance to see if they're willing to step up? Accept the deal with the refurbished unit? Ask if the insurance will pay a percent for new unit if they won't pay for new? If they refuse, go with new anyway and pay the difference myself?
I paid just under 10K summer of '12 for the boat. Ran like a dream before this. Any thoughts are appreciated.
