Reg. number on 70HP Mercury

I need to rebuild my carburators and fuel pump, but the Mercury dealer needs the reg.number on my motor.. I don't have the right one.. Is it possible to get this number out of the information I have? The plate with reg.number imprinted is gone.. <br /><br />1982 Mercury 70hp, inline 3syl, 2 carburatores. When I bought the motor I was told the reg.number was: 9046840. The shop tells me this number is invalid..

The shop is correct. Those serial numbers do not match a 1982.

Okey.. But is it possible to tell the number from the info I have? Or isn't my motor from 1982?
