Regal 2860 only planes sometimes.

My neighbor just bought a 2002 Regal 2860 28'. It has twin Volvo Penta 4.3 MPI with duoprops. We had the compression checked and took it for a sea trial. With 5 adults, it would not plane. The mechanic that performed the compression test said it may be the fuel injectors as he had to clean the varnish out of the generator's carb. He wanted to flush the injectors.

3 days later and the injectors flushed, we did another sea trial. This time only three adults. It jumped on plane in under 8 seconds.

With just my neighbor and I it planes quickly and reaches 4,700 RPM's at 44MPH.
The other night with 4 adults, 1 child and 2 small dogs, it had the same symptoms as before. It would just dig a trench. I got up on the bow and the boat slowly came to plane.

I don't think its a prop issue because its reaching its prescribed WOT RPM.(only 100 off) Power issue is my guess.

Compression checked out fine.
New plugs.
Fuel tank flushed.
New Gas

Any ideas? I've only worked on carbureted engines and know very little about the MPI systems.

Where are all the people placed? If they're all astern-it may not get up.

Two girls astern. Everybody else in cockpit. Is the boat underpowered for its size? I know the boat is heavy. I'm just surprised that Regal would put in engines that cant plane with 4 or 5 people when it sleeps 4 or 5 people.

It did slowly come to plane when i got in the bow pulpit though. No gear either.(coolers etc...) Just a quick boat ride.

Maybe a prop change is in order. Just gotta watch the tach when boat only has 2 on board.

I had similiar problems last year with my twin Volvo 5.0 GXi engines, the problem is paint peeling from inside the fuel pump assembly and fouling the screens on the high pressure pump, fuel pressure regulator and fuel injectors. Volvo Penta fuel pumps for MPI engines are notorius for this paint problem. There is also a Volvo service bulletin that tells you to replace the screen in your fuel pressure regulator with an e-clip.

It applies to the 4.3 too? It only mentions the e-clip for the 5.0 & 5.7.

I guess it uses the same fuel pump and injectors as the SBC's.

This would sure explain the "lack of power" feeling.

I hadn't noticed that the SB did not apply to the 4.3 which is strange considering it's the same part for the 4.3 GXi engine.
