Hi,

I'm restoring a 1978 CVX-16 and am exploring the idea of re gelcoating the boat, as it would be a little more original and it's being restored as a project for my high school tech composite class and gelcoat are a more like composites than paint. Anyway the boat was previously painted (by me 2 years ago before I knew better; it's been a learning process) and regrets so I've pretty much stripped all the paint off but some small amounts remain in some areas that will be very difficult to get rid of. However they are in areas that will be covered by interior trim and Ill keep trying a bit but I don't think Ill get it all without media blasting or something.. maybe pressure washer. Anyway I'm looking to do a very thorough job of this and was wondering if the small flecks of paint would cause issues with the gelcoat or I should just paint again but better as I have learned quite a lot from my mistakes, I will also have a dust free spray booth and all with like an industrial air compressor so I'm all set there. Also I have plenty of time and materials so the extra work gelcoat will take does not hinder me. Thank you for your expertise.

Please dont post the same topic in multiple forums.

I deleted the other one, here in the boat building forum is the best place to ask this question.

Thanks

Every bit of paint needs to be removed before you apply gel coat.

Have you researched and studied the trials and tribulations of spraying and finishing gelcoat??

Hi, sorry for messing up the post I didn't see this section when scrolling through initially and then realized here would be a better spot thank you. Also yes I figured I would have to remove all paint, I will try to get pictures, also the amount that is left is extremely minimal its just worked into the fiberglass where the gelcoat chipped at the bottom edge of the mold. Also yes I have read and researched extensively and watched many videos even 45 minute documentaries on gelcoat, so I am aware of the amount of work gelcoat will take, unfortunately out of the 50 sources on gelcoat there is about 45 different ways to do it. Thank you for your answers so far, any more insight would be greatly appreciated!
