okay, I am starting a new thread on this because I have seen a couple of postings on the mysterious extra purple wire that is present on older regulators, that is lacking in the newer one.

my engine is a 1987 evinrude 225, and the sierra replacement that I bought came with a note explaining that the purple wire on the old reg is obsolete, and to just be sure that the lead it connected to on the terminal block just stays free of moving parts.

my question is this: the purple wire from my old reg was screwed into the terminal with TWO purple leads. one is bright purple, and one is very light in color, kind of lavender. do I just leave them both dangling, or should I screw them back to the post together? what is this second, mystery lead?

Make sure that you put the two remaining purple leads back together on the terminal block. The one is ignition voltage and the other probably powers the vro warning module that has been updated.

Re: Regulator/Rectifier Hookup Questions

thanks! I looked you are right about the second one, it leads to the VRO. (4 wire model)

okay, on to the next question. I also replaced the stator and power packs at the time I replaced the regulator. (I want toi be sure!) -when I ran the thing, the engine would not cut when I turned the key off (thread is titled Engine wont turn off!). even the emergency cutoff on the lanyard next to the ignition did not work. I was told that this could be a bad connection of the black/yellow leads from the new power packs onto their receivers. these are two single-wire plugins inside of a black boot. I have checked the connections and they seem solid.

what are the single-wire black leads from the power pack that have a ring connector on them? are they just bolt-to-block grounds? the old ones were pinned under the power pack mounting bolts, but maybe the loctite I put in these when I threaded them back in could be interrupting the circuit? I dont want to try starting this thing up again until I am sure of everything. thanks for you help.

Re: Regulator/Rectifier Hookup Questions

Correct...Both blacks to ground screw.... The black/yellow leads will head up to the ignition switch, not directly to ground. If they went straight to ground, the motor would not run...
