I have a 90HP mariner, 1991 model 3 cyl. This is the one with the regulator and rectifier all as one component. mercury part no 815279A2, or sierra no 18-5741.... my question is this, the voltage reg side is working great and maintaining a steady charge but i am not getting a signal to my tach, These thing cost a ton to replace.... what do you guys reccomend a guy to do here. it is the one with 5 ring terminal leads coming out of a sealed regualtor box. I have found one with the 3 screw terminal on the top plus the ground with the same mercury number? is this interchangable, with the 2 red power wires, 2 yellow stator wires and grey tach wire? i assume i have those right? any help would be much appreciated

First check the wiring from the VR to your tach. Make sure the wire is not shorted to ground or has a broken or bad connector. Ohm it from the tach to the VR.

If the wire checks out and you are sure the gauge is good and has +12V and ground connections that are good, tap into one of the yellow stator wires. That is the source of the tach signal.

So what your saying here is that the VR/RECT box is just a connection between the stator (yellow) wire and the tach (grey) wire? Why is this not run directly? Does it matter which of the stator wires i tap into for the tach signal? Ill double check the ground and ohm the tach wire this evening... the tach is brand new and set to the mercury setting 6/12

Yes, the raw stator signal runs the tacho. Either side of the stator is fine.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP! i really appreciate it

without voltage regulator: +/- 16 volts at WOT
with voltage regulator: 14.4 volts
