1987 50 esh what's the trick to get the pistons back in the cylinders.
Special tool?
4 or more hands?
Can it be done by one person?

The tool referenced above will not work on outboards.

Have you tried your standard piston ring compressor?

Use your hand it's easy put the rings on the piston and set it down until the ring sits on the block. Then get a popsicle stick or a wooden dowel and just push the ring in the groove, make sure the locating pin is lined up with the ring gap. Put slight pressure on the top of the piston and it will drop in when the ring is in the groove. You will see as you work it around that the piston will drop in the hole slightly holding the ring in the groove.

On That motor you should be shoving all pistons with crank assembly in from the crankcase side of cylinders if it is like my 1999 C40.

plastic cable tyraps sucked down on the individual rings compressing them comes in handy, along with an extra set of hands.
Just cut the tyraps off as the rings slip into the cylinders as the pistons go in.

They are a pain to get to them all together like that

A good explanation of what you ended up doing may help someone else down the road if they look up your thread
