Reinstalling 3.8 Engine

Hi Guys! I have now rebuilt the GM 3.8 in my 87 Fabuglas Bowrider. The engine rebuilt very nicely. This deal started when I let the Exhaust Manifolds freeze. I have yet to find exhaust manifolds, but hope springs eternal! If anyone knows of the Stringer drive manifolds please let me know. Anyway the engine is ready to go back and I removed the engine and left the drive on. The manual says to remove the drive to reinstall the powerplant. I suppose this is necessary, but it looks like the shaft would slip back in easily enough. Is there a problem with the line up? The head of the shaft slips about 2 inches into a splined hub that bolts to the flywheel. I do not understand where the line-up comes into play. It seems that having the shaft where it will turn to engage the hub is the only problem, which can be accomplished by having the drive in gear and turning the prop. What am I missing here? You guys have been great! I have learned more about my rig from ya'll than you would believe! Thanks!

Your engine needs to be alinged every year. You risk damage to your coupler and out drive splines. Been there done that.
