relatively easy water flow questions

My 1971 60hp hydroelec shift runs on the muffs. I put a new impeller on because previous owner said he changed it two years ago and could probably need a change. I assume the two holes at the base of the powerhead are water outlets. I did not get any water exiting these holes while test running it on the muffs.

Does the lower unit need to be submerged before it can allow water to exit these?
Does it need to be operating temp (flowing through T-stat)?
Or do you think the water tubes going up to the powerhead are not sealing?
Or something else...

Thanks for the help.
Karrick

First, if all you replaced was the impeller I would strongly suggest that you go ahead and replace the rest of the complete kit.

Make sure the hot horn is working but moniter the temp anyway after replacing the pump. At that point most likely you will be good to go. Yes, it probably will let more water out the relief holes once there is water inside the exhaust housing.

Good luck!

I had an 85 with the same setup (relief ports on the rear of the leg). Whether water exited through the ports was always irrelevant to cooling, as far as I could tell -- sprayed water sometimes, and sometimes not at idle. At speeds, I recall that there was usually a pretty heavy spray. Do the usual checks to see if the engine is overheating (temp sticks, or simply place the side of your hand on the top of the cylinder head -- should be able to hold your hand there for at least a few seconds.) If the temp is OK, don't worry about the relief ports.
